Read a few pages before you check the date. The wit, the wandering, the refusal to be tidy about a hard question: A Room of One's Own reads so fresh and so stylistically original that it could have been written today. And yet Virginia Woolf delivered this argument as two lectures at Cambridge in October 1928, and revised it into a book the following year. Its central claim is no less true, and no less urgent, for being said nearly a century ago.
It began as an answer to a loaded question: What does it take for a woman to write? Woolf's answer wanders through history, fiction, money, and the imagined sister of Shakespeare who never got the chance, arriving at a claim so plain it still unsettles. Five hundred pounds a year and a door that locks. It is essay as argument and as story, never simply a lecture.
This Crossroads edition presents Woolf's original 1929 text in full, paired with a new foreword by editor Chad Prevost that places the lectures in the moment they were delivered and in the moment we're reading them now. A reading group discussion guide is included, ready for book clubs and classrooms prepared to sit with the questions.
Nearly a hundred years later, the room is still worth asking for.
