Why does Freemasonry speak through symbols?
In The Symbolism of Freemasonry, renowned nineteenth-century Masonic scholar Albert G. Mackey examines the ideas concealed within the Craft's ceremonies, legends, architecture, working tools, and ritual traditions.
For Mackey, Freemasonry is more than a collection of ceremonies. It is a system of moral and philosophical instruction expressed through symbolism. He traces that symbolic system through the ancient mysteries, operative and speculative Masonry, the building of King Solomon's Temple, and the traditions that developed around the lodge and its degrees.
At the center of the work is the Temple itself-not merely as a historical structure, but as an image of spiritual construction. Mackey explains how the operative Mason's work of shaping stone and erecting a physical temple becomes, in speculative Masonry, an allegory for the cultivation of character and the building of an inner moral and spiritual edifice.
Along the way, Mackey explores many of Freemasonry's enduring symbols and themes, including the rough and perfect ashlar, the point within a circle, ritual circumambulation, investiture, the symbolism of light, the cornerstone, the winding stairs, the third degree, the symbolism of labor, the foundation stone, and the Lost Word. The book also distinguishes between individual Masonic symbols and the larger symbolism embodied in ritual and ceremony.
Mackey ultimately presents Freemasonry as what he calls a "science of symbolism"-a tradition in which the lodge, its ceremonies, and its emblems become vehicles for philosophical and moral instruction.
