The Lanterns That Remembered Every Life

In the ancient city of Aethelard, every soul carries the weight of countless previous lives. At the Festival of Illumination, magical lanterns reveal the memories, identities, and deeds accumulated across thousands of years, preserving the endless cycle known as the Great Loop. To possess a history is to belong. To have no history is to be considered broken.Elias Hawthorne is the exception. When his lantern refuses to ignite, revealing a terrifying blankness instead of centuries of memories, Elias becomes an anomaly in a civilization built entirely upon the past. The artisan Fiona warns him that the Overseers will never tolerate a soul without a record and urges him to hide the lantern before the authorities discover the truth.Fleeing into the city's hidden depths, Elias encounters Zane Mercer, a dangerous merchant who traffics in stolen memories preserved inside mysterious Soul-Jars. He also meets Clara, a child who carries the consciousness of an ancient general and has grown exhausted from remembering countless deaths, wars, and tragedies. Through her, Elias discovers the terrible secret behind Aethelard: the River of Remembrance is no longer flowing toward death and rebirth. It has become a stagnant reservoir, trapping souls in an endless cycle of accumulated memories.Elias gradually realizes that his blank soul is not a defect-it may be the only force capable of breaking the cycle. While High Overseer Jasper Kingsley attempts to preserve the ancient order, Elias must choose between accepting the identity imposed upon him or embracing the terrifying freedom of being truly new.The Lanterns That Remembered Every Life is an atmospheric fantasy about memory, identity, reincarnation, and the courage to begin again. It asks a haunting question: What if remembering everything is not the gift we believe it to be-and forgetting is the first step toward becoming truly alive?
