When Tony Anderson moves to Weeping Pines, Pennsylvania, he expects a slower life-charming streets, quiet neighborhoods, and a fresh place to start over. What he finds instead is a dying mountain town where the river is always too loud, the roads never feel safe, and every friendly face seems to be hiding something.
After a tragic accident sends a family van into the rapids below Main Street, Tony's world seems to be abruptly crumbling down around him. His new home carries an uneasy history, and Nancy Caldwell, the sweet but unsettling town treasurer, takes a sudden interest in Tony that quickly becomes borderline obsessive.
Meanwhile, three teenage friends-Richie, Michael, and Josh-are drawn into the same strange current after one of them begins having blackouts. As secrets surface and accidents spread through Weeping Pines, Tony and the boys find their lives crossing in ways none of them can explain.
Cut off by a natural disaster and trapped beneath the shadow of the ever-present mountain, they must decide what to trust: the people around them, the stories they've been told, or the cries of the kingfishers watching from the riverbank.
