商品簡介

The client asks when it goes to production. The room goes quiet.

That silence happens somewhere in every delivery organization, most weeks. Someone asks what has actually been delivered so far, and nobody can say. Someone asks what is left, and gets three different answers. How late are we, really? What is blocking us - and what is not blocked that we could be moving on right now? Each question lands, and each one goes unanswered.

The important thing about that room is who is sitting in it. The team can build. The project manager cares. The client is reasonable. What they lack is not talent or effort - it is a system. Nobody has built the thing that would let them answer those questions, so they sit in the fog together, each one privately certain the others must know something they do not.

A leader can only give clarity they already have. You cannot transmit a signal you do not hold. Without a business objective, a scope, a set of milestones, a critical path, and a true state of completion, no amount of communication skill will save you - because what gets communicated is fog. And fog, transmitted confidently, is how good teams, good products, and good client relationships are set up to fail.

The good news is that clarity is manufacturable. Every anxious question in that room maps to a concrete instrument that answers it.

This book builds them one at a time, in the order a real project needs them, following a single project - a customer self-service portal called Project Atlas - from the meeting where everyone is lost to the one where nobody is:

  • The charter, and why the why has to be settled before the what
  • Scope, the statement of work, and the acceptance criteria that decide who pays when "done" is disputed
  • The work breakdown structure, and why a wall of tickets is not a plan
  • Three-point estimates, the critical path, and the one rule that stops a date becoming a promise
  • What a project actually costs, and how margin bleeds out through small unmanaged events
  • Risk, the RAID log, and the boring middle step where risk management really dies
  • Vendors, and the seams between organizations
  • Earned value - the honest answer to where are we, really - and its limits
  • Milestones, gates, and the last safe checkpoint before a project cannot be saved
  • Change enablement, agile and hybrid delivery, honest escalation, and closure that outlives the project

Two chapters take on what AI changes and what it does not: where a co-pilot genuinely accelerates the work of drafting and synthesis, and where the judgment stays stubbornly human.

Then the book returns to the opening call and re-runs it, with the same project, the same people, the same things going wrong - and a project manager who can answer the question in one sentence.

Every instrument comes with a worked Atlas example and a worksheet to run on your own project, collected in a nine-part Practice Kit at the back, alongside a glossary and a chapter-indexed reference.

For project managers, delivery managers, and consultants who are tired of being asked a reasonable question and having nothing solid to say.
