This book seeks to understand the answers to questions of what causes students, specifically male, Latino students, to disengage from their education. In this critical ethnography, the author studies five Latino boys who attend a suburban middle school on eastern Long Island, NY, which has seen an increase of Latino students in the past ten years while the demographics of the teachers remained largely unchanged. Jones-Golembeski uses the sociopolitical and sociocultural perspectives of language and literacy along with her understanding of culturally responsive pedagogies to frame her research and learn more about each member of the learning triad: teachers, parents and students. Failure and the Discourse of Caring is a good reminder of how teachers are often the gatekeepers to student learning and a valuable tool for any teacher who wants to better understand how racial and linguistic positioning can impact student success.
