The Somali civil war began in January 1991. Within a year, the warring factions in Mogadishu had destroyed much of the historic city through shelling, terror, and widespread looting, forcing many residents to flee their homes. Regrettably, more than thirty-five years later, the various Somali clan-based factions, whose alliances and objectives frequently shift according to their interests, have failed to establish a stable government capable of providing peace, security, order, and justice for the population, particularly for communities often described as minorities in Somalia.
This book examines the history of the Banadir coastal region of southern Somalia while also exploring historical perspectives related to the East African littoral and beliefs concerning the origins of Somali nomadic and pastoral clans. It provides an important foundation for scholars and readers interested in writing about the Somali people and the communities often referred to as Somalia's minorities, including the Bantu, Banadiri, Bajuni, and others.
In this work, the author discusses and hypothesises about the etymology of several historical names, including Azania, Essina, Sarapi獼, Nik獼, Mogadishu, Barawa, and Somali. The book also critically examines the widely circulated claim among certain Somali nomadic and pastoral clans that they are descendants of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, who lived in Makkah (Saudi Arabia) nearly 1,500 years ago.
Additionally, the book explores the Banadir region and its early inhabitants, their relationships with the outside world, and the forms of administration that existed before the Italian Parliament established Somalia Italiana (Italian Somaliland) in 1908. It also examines the claim that the Omani al-Busaidi sultans of Zanzibar sold the Banadir port towns to Italy. Furthermore, the book highlights the role played by the people of Banadir in shaping the history and development of modern Somalia.
