France, 1270.
Sir Bonafortunis of Aquitaine was once a master of philosophical arts at the University of Paris before he was exiled from the city he loved under circumstances he'd rather not discuss. He now wanders the provinces as a goliard, tutoring the children of minor nobility, surviving by wit and ingenuity.
When he discovers the gruesome aftermath of a roadside ambush, he acquires a freshly orphaned boy and together they rescue a maiden from a borderland castle. Before he can say foie gras, he's brought before the king and queen for a discreet assignment-a wildly generous royal commission: find their daughter, the missing princess, tell no one.
What follows is a chase across the French countryside - part philosophical inquiry, part whimsical misadventure - involving highway bandits, a heresy trial, a troupe of English troubadours, three dwarves of questionable allegiance, and a marquis with designs on the throne of France.
Sir Bon is not a warrior knight. He is a scholar, a teacher, a man who has spent his life winning arguments rather than sword fights. But somewhere between a powerful schemer's dungeon and a coronation banquet, between the liturgical barbecue at an inhospitable abbey and the riot of steel that follows, he will have to decide what he actually believes and whether that belief is worth dying for.
