In the rough river town of Cairo, Illinois, in the 1840s, Elias Hart is a hardworking dock laborer with little education, few prospects, and a simple life with his wife. Strong is preparing to disappear-and to be reborn as Samuel David Silver, a self-proclaimed prophet determined to establish his own ministry, attract followers, and rival the religious movements sweeping the American frontier.
