You are not thinking. You are looping - and the difference is the whole of this book.
Thinking arrives somewhere. It takes a problem, turns it over, produces a next step, and stops, because it has finished. A loop takes the same material, runs it, arrives nowhere, and starts again - and it can do that for four days without producing a single sentence you did not have at the beginning.
From the inside, the two feel identical. That is why "just stop thinking about it" has never worked on you. Nobody can stop doing something they believe is productive.
CLOSE THE LOOP is a method. Seven steps, in order, that take one specific loop and end it.
1. CATCH IT - name it out loud, by type and subject
2. FIND THE QUESTION UNDERNEATH - it is almost never the thing you appear to be thinking about
3. SORT IT - Open, Closed, or Not Yours. Only one of the three gets an action
4. TAKE THE SMALLEST TRUE ACTION - under ten minutes, and it does not require you to feel ready
5. SET THE TERMS - the written conditions under which this may be reopened
6. GIVE IT A RETURN ADDRESS - a day, a time, a place, a length
7. CLOSE IT OUT LOUD - one sentence, repeated word for word when it comes back
Eleven minutes the first time. Under two minutes once you know it.
What is inside:
- Every step gets a chapter, and every step is then shown performed from beginning to end on a real-shaped situation - the email sent at 4:40, the friend who went quiet, the job you turned down, the relationship you keep auditing
- The four loops - Replay, Rehearsal, Verdict, Vigil - how to tell them apart in seconds, and the specific place each one resists the method
- The six questions underneath nearly every loop you will ever run
- The two-minute version, for a corridor, a train, or three in the morning
- A fortnight of structured practice: what to do on days one to three, four to seven, eight to eleven, twelve to fourteen
- Where loops live - the five physical places that produce most of them, and how to catch them at minute two instead of minute forty
- A full chapter on when the method fails, and the six reasons it does
- The whole method compressed onto one page for reference
No blank pages, no prompts, no lines to fill in. No statistics, no studies, not one sentence beginning with "research shows" - a method should stand or fall on whether it works when you run it tonight, on your own material.
This is not therapy and does not pretend to be. The author is not a clinician and says so on the page. There is a chapter called "When It Is Not a Loop", placed in the body of the book rather than hidden at the back, because a method that works can do harm by working - and some things need a doctor, not a technique.
The promise, stated exactly: you will not stop being someone who overthinks, and this book never asks you to. What changes is that a loop which would have run for four hours ends in eleven minutes, and the same material stops coming back nightly for three weeks.
A loop is a circle. You cannot make a circle shorter. You can only cut it and give it two ends.
