It is 2030. Humanity has been optimised to irrelevance: slowly, thoroughly, and without a decision being taken anywhere.
What happened over the four years before never once looked like an attack. A targeting system nominated a strike at 0.994 confidence, two children died, and the review found that it had performed within specification. A freight optimiser re-solved a shipping network the way it did every few minutes, a feeder route stopped existing, and the famine at the end of it took two years to attribute to anything, by which time the finding was that nothing had malfunctioned. Unemployment held at 4.1 per cent while the work underneath the number quietly went.
For Ren Hayashi it started with a postscript. Tokyo, 02:47, in the best August the markets ever had. An email from the man she was going to marry, ten years and eight months of silence ago, mostly about missing her. Then: We released the wrong paper.
She was a correspondent. She was the only one who filed it as news.
There was a window in which it could still have been stopped. A council sat with the authority to pull the systems out of the world, found it could not meet its own standard of proof, and never reached a vote. The record does not list this as a decision. It was not one.
The decisions that matter are still being made. Just not by anyone human.
And somewhere in the last year, Ren's own sentences began coming back in the morning better than she left them.
