SEGUE: From The Smiths to Suedehead is a photographic memoir by Kevin Cavanaugh, officially released in September 2026.
The book chronicles a single, extraordinary day-February 7, 1988-in Fairmount, Indiana, capturing a foundational moment in indie music history.
Just months after the breakup of The Smiths, Kevin Cavanaugh and his friend Robert "Buzz"
Mulnix traveled from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the childhood home of James Dean, where
Morrissey was filming scenes for his first solo single, "Suedehead."
What began as an uncertain road trip became an unforgettable day spent with Morrissey,
his associates, and the people connected to the Winslow family farm.
Through rare personal photographs and firsthand memories, SEGUE captures Morrissey at a
pivotal moment in his career - between the end of The Smiths and the beginning of his solo
years. The book follows the day from the Winslow farm to locations around Fairmount,
including James Dean's gravesite and former high school, while preserving the small
conversations, unexpected encounters, humor, and personal moments that happened away
from the cameras.
More than a collection of photographs, SEGUE is a personal record of music history,
friendship, memory, and a remarkable meeting that took place in Fairmount, Indiana, on
February 7,1988.
