商品簡介

For three years, Jivan Mercer has lived as a monk at a remote mountain monastery, trying to bury the identity and guilt of the man he once was. After the deaths of his parents, he abandoned his younger sister Adeline and the family life they had shared, convincing himself that entering the monastery was a spiritual calling. But when a letter reaches him from the valley, he learns that Adeline is facing financial ruin. Their family property is threatened, debts are mounting, and the life he left behind is collapsing without him. Jivan decides that he must return and save her, even if it means abandoning the religious life he has built. While descending the mountain through heavy fog, Jivan becomes lost and injured. Exhausted and frightened, he reaches a secluded hollow beneath the trees, where he discovers a mysterious old wanderer sitting beside a dying fire. The stranger knows Jivan's secular name-Julian Mercer-a name Jivan believed he had buried forever when he took his monastic vows. Even more disturbing, the stranger knows details about his family, his sister, and the guilt that drove him into the monastery. The wanderer tells Jivan something he desperately does not want to hear. Jivan believes that returning home and sacrificing his religious life will make him a hero who saves Adeline. The stranger argues that this is another form of escape. Jivan is not truly returning because Adeline asked him to; he is returning because he cannot bear the guilt of remaining safely behind monastery walls while his sister suffers. The stranger challenges him to recognize the difference between genuine responsibility and self-punishment.Then comes the most frightening warning of all. The stranger tells Jivan that if he abandons his robe in the belief that his suffering will save Adeline, he may destroy her instead. The words terrify him because they give shape to his deepest fear: that even his attempt at redemption could become another selfish act.Jivan demands certainty. He wants the stranger to be a prophet who can tell him exactly what will happen if he returns. But the wanderer refuses to give him that comfort. He explains that there is no guaranteed future, no divine script that will absolve Jivan of responsibility for his choices. Whether the stranger is a real man, an older reflection of Jivan, or simply a figure who understands human guilt does not matter. His message forces Jivan to confront the truth he has been avoiding: he cannot buy his sister's salvation with his own suffering. She needs a living brother, not a martyr.Jivan eventually returns to the valley and experiences the ordinary world without the protective walls of the monastery. The noise, mud, work, and people he once knew make him realize how completely he had separated himself from life. He must face Adeline, his family's debts, and the consequences of his absence without expecting a miraculous answer. His journey becomes less about choosing between religion and family and more about understanding why he ran from the world in the first place. When he finally returns to the monastery, Jivan is changed. He no longer sees his religious robe as a fortress where he can hide from guilt, nor does he view returning to the valley as a heroic sacrifice. He understands that service must be chosen freely, not used as punishment. Abbot Lawrence recognizes the transformation in him and welcomes him back without demanding explanations about the strange wanderer or the ordeal in the mountains. The story ends with Jivan kneeling quietly beneath the evening sky, no longer consumed by fear of yesterday or certainty about tomorrow. The stranger has taught him that the future is not a prophecy waiting to be revealed but a path created through living choices. His past is forgiven, the future remains unwritten, and for the first time Jivan can remain in the present without needing to escape from it.
