Basic relevant information on methodologies used in neurological disease models can be extremely hard to find. Originally published in 2006, this important reference work contains 30 chapters from over 60 internationally recognized scientists and covers every major methodology and disease model used in neuroscience research. Divided into two major sections, the first deals with general methodologies in neuroscience research covering topics from animal welfare and ethical issues to surgical procedures, post-operative care and behavioral testing. Section two covers every major disease model including traumatic brain injury, ischemia and stroke, to Parkinson's, motor neurone disease, epilepsy and sleep disorders. Delivering critical methodological information and describing small animal models for almost all major neurological diseases, this book forms an essential reference for anyone working in neuroscience, from beginning students to experienced researchers and medical professionals.

The serotonin transporter is a key brain protein that modulates the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin from synaptic spaces back into the presynaptic neuron. This control over neuronal signalling makes it a prime area of neuroscientific study. In this book an international team of top experts introduce and explicate the role of serotonin and the serotonin transporter in both human and animal brains. They demonstrate the relevance of the transporter and indeed the serotonergic system to substrates of neuropsychiatric disorders, and explain how this knowledge is translated into valid animal models that will help foster new discoveries in human neurobiology. Writing for graduate students and academic researchers, they provide a comprehensive coverage of a wide spectrum of data from animal experimentation to clinical psychiatry, creating the only book exclusively dedicated to this exciting new avenue of brain research.

Human Organic Memory Disorders
90 折
出版日:1988/10/20 作者:Andrew R. Mayes  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  裝訂:平裝
Brain damage can cause memory to break down in a number of different ways, the analysis of which can illuminate how the intact brain mediates memory processes. After first considering the problems involved in assessing memory, this book provisionally advances a taxonomy of elementary memory disorders and, for each in turn, reviews both the specific processes that are disrupted and the lesions responsible for the disruption. These disorders include short-term memory deficits, deficits in previously well-established memory, memory decifits caused by frontal lobe lesions, the organic amnesias, the disorders of conditioning and skill acquisition. Particular attention is paid to the organic amnesias, about which we know the most, and to the contributions of animal models to our knowledge. Andrew Mayes argues that the memory deficits found in several neurological and psychiatric syndromes comprise co-occurring elementary memory disorders. Finally, he outlines the implications of his taxonomy

Foundations of Behavior Genetics provides a forward-looking introduction to this fascinating field. Written by an experienced teacher and researcher, this text focuses on concepts, methods, and findings that inform our understanding of heredity–behavior relations. The book's neuroscience perspective asks students to think about potential neural mechanisms involved in pathways from genes to behavior. While the text is primarily focused on human behavior genetics, it also emphasizes the importance of non-human animal models in experimental studies, as well as their evolutionary connections to humans. Part I covers the history of behavior genetics and the basics of non-molecular genetics; Part II discusses molecular genetics and neurogenetics; Part III addresses various behavioral disorders; and Part IV explores health, social behavior, and ethical implications. The text includes detailed chapter summaries, several “Check-up” questions after major sections that test student understanding,

In two volumes - available individually and as a set - the Textbook of Neural Repair and Rehabilitation provides comprehensive coverage of the science and practice of neurological rehabilitation. Volume 1 - Neural Repair and Plasticity - covers the basic sciences relevant to recovery of function following injury to the nervous system. Volume 2 - Medical Neurorehabilitation - stands alone as a clinical handbook for neurorehabilitation, providing authoritative guidelines on the management of disabling symptoms, and describing comprehensive rehabilitation approaches for all categories of disabling neurological disorders. The two volumes are better integrated with significant new material on outcome measures, clinical trials, combination therapies, animal models of locomotor function, nerve stimulation, and neuroprosthetics, including robotic rehabilitation strategies. Revised throughout, bringing the book fully up to date, and edited and written by leading international authorities, this

Grooming is among the most evolutionary ancient and highly represented behaviours in many animal species. It represents a significant proportion of an animal's total activity and between 30-50% of their waking hours. Recent research has demonstrated that grooming is regulated by specific brain circuits and is sensitive to stress, as well as to pharmacologic compounds and genetic manipulation, making it ideal for modelling affective disorders that arise as a function of stressful environments, such as stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. Over a series of 12 chapters that introduce and explicate the field of grooming research and its significance for the human and animal brain, this book covers the breadth of grooming animal models while simultaneously providing sufficient depth in introducing the concepts and translational approaches to grooming research. Written primarily for graduates and researchers within the neuroscientific community.
