Singularity theory is a broad subject with vague boundaries. It draws on many other areas of mathematics, and in turn has contributed to many areas both within and outside mathematics, in particular differential and algebraic geometry, knot theory, differential equations, bifurcation theory, Hamiltonian mechanics, optics, robotics and computer vision. This volume consists of two dozen articles from some of the best known figures in singularity theory, and it presents an up-to-date survey of research in this area.

This book deals with contemporary issues of vital global concern on human rights, environment and development, and religion. In the text of his 1993 Rede Lecture - which forms the basis for the book - the author presents his own analytical comments on current thinking on these issues. Also included are declarations from three major conferences: the Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro in 1992; the UN World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna, 1993; and the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago, 1993. The author led delegations to these conferences, and was closely associated with their deliberations.

This book presents a collection of papers on the issue of focus in its broadest sense. While commonly being considered as related to phenomena such as presupposition and anaphora, focusing is much more widely spread, and it is this pervasiveness that this collection addresses. The volume explicitly aims to bring together theoretical, psychological, and descriptive approaches to focus, at the same time maintaining the overall interest in how these notions apply to the larger problem of evolving some formal representation of the semantic aspects of linguistic content. The contributed papers to this volume have been reworked from a selection of original work presented at a conference held in 1994 in Schloss Wolfsbrunnen in Germany.

This 1982 book consists of papers presented at the World Climate Research Programme study conference on land surface processes held in Greenbelt, Maryland from 5 to 10 January 1981. The papers cover the following: the state of knowledge of the sensitivity of atmospheric general circulation models on hydrology and other land surface processes: assessment of the state of knowledge of numerical modelling of hydrology and other land surface processes at the scale of atmospheric general circulation models; recommendations for research activities; establishment of data requirements for initialization, validation, and parameter evaluation. This book will continue to be of interest to atmospheric scientists, soil physicists, hydrologists and climatologists.

Category theory and related topics of mathematics have been increasingly applied to computer science in recent years. This book contains selected papers from the London Mathematical Society Symposium on the subject which was held at the University of Durham. The interaction between macroeconomic and agricultural sector reforms is of vital importance to developing and East European economies, whose agricultural sectors account for major shares of economic activity and income. It comprises selected papers from a conference held at the University of Montreal. Topics covered in the articles include association schemes, extremal problems, combinatorial geometrics and matroids, and designs. Every four years, leading researchers gather to survey the latest developments in all aspects of group theory. Since 1981, the proceedings of those meetings have provided a regular snapshot of the state of the art in group theory and helped to shape the direction of research in the field. Interdisciplinary/Multidisciplinary Woolf comprises thirty-five essays selected from papers delivered at the 22nd Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf, hosted by the University of Saskatchewan. The thirty papers in this 1986 volume review the scientific knowledge of the nature of flint and chert at this time. These papers were presented at a 1983 interdisciplinary and international conference on flint and other cherts. Each contribution has been meticulously assessed and edited prior to publication. This collection is principally concerned with the geology and geochemistry of flint in European chert. Topics include the origin of flint; scanning electron microscopy of surface textures; and the behaviour of flint under periglacial conditions. There is a companion volume, edited by G. de G. Sieveking and M. B. Hart, on the archaeological uses of flint.

This volume presents the results of a fifth and final conference on the history of total war. It is devoted to the Second World War, which many scholars regard as the paradigmatic instance of total war. In considering the validity of this proposition, the authors address a broad range of analytical problems that this vast conflict posed in the arenas of Europe and Asia. They analyze modes of combat, war aims, the mobilization of economies and societies, occupation regimes, the vulnerability of noncombatants, and the legal and moral issues raised by the industrialized warfare of the mid-twentieth century. The volume will be of interest to all students of war and society in the modern era.

This volume, which was first published in 1991, presents a comprehensive review of all aspects of the physics of the aurorae australis and borealis. The broad topics covered relate to the different sections of a conference held in Cambridge to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Professor Sydney Chapman, FRS, who can be considered the founder of the subject in its modern form. Contributions from an international group of experts in the field discuss the physical causes and effects of the aurorae, the nightly show of dancing lights in the atmosphere, at heights above 100 km. On the date of his 80th birthday a conference was held in his honour at Trinity College, Cambridge. Many leading combinatorialists attended. Their subsequent contributions are collected here. The areas represented range from set theory and geometry, through graph theory, group theory and combinatorial probability, to randomised algorithms and statistical physics. Erdös himself was able to give a survey of recent progress made on his favourite problems. Consequently this volume, consisting of in-depth studies at the frontier of research, provides a valuable panorama across the breadth of combinatorics as it is today.

This book contains conference proceedings from the 1996 Durham Symposium on 'Galois representations in arithmetic algebraic geometry'. The title was interpreted loosely and the symposium covered recent developments on the interface between algebraic number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry. The book reflects this and contains a mixture of articles. Some are expositions of subjects which have received substantial attention, e.g. Erez on geometric trends in Galois module theory; Mazur on rational points on curves and varieties; Moonen on Shimura varieties in mixed characteristics; Rubin and Scholl on the work of Kato on the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture; and Schneider on rigid geometry. Finite fields are algebraic structures in which there is much research interest and they have been shown to have a wide range of applications. These proceedings give a state-of-the-art account of the area of finite fields and their applications in communications (coding theory, cryptology), combinatorics, design theory, quasirandom points, algorithms and their complexity. Typically, theory and application are tightly interwoven in the survey articles and original research papers included here. For a number of years, French mathematicians have run regular number theory conferences to which they have invited number theorists from many countries. The ICM 2010 satellite conference 'Geometry, Topology and Dynamics in Negative Curvature' afforded an excellent opportunity to discuss various aspects of this fascinating interdisciplinary subject in which methods and techniques from geometry, topology, and dynamics often interact in novel and interesting ways. Containing ten survey articles written by some of the leading experts in the field, this proceedings volume provides an overview of important recent developments relating to negative curvature. Topics covered include homogeneous dynamics, harmonic manifolds, the Atiyah Conjecture, counting circles and arcs, and hyperbolic buildings. Each author pays particular attention to the expository aspects, making the book particularly useful for graduate students and mathematicians interested in transitioning from other areas via the common theme of negative curvature.

This collection of papers from the Twentieth British Legal History Conference explores the relationship between substantive law and the way in which it actually worked. Instead of looking at what the courts said they were doing, it is concerned more with the reality of what was happening. To that end, the authors use a wide range of sources, from court records to merchants' diaries and lawyers' letters. The way in which the sources are used reflects the possibilities of legal historical research which are opening up in the twenty-first century, as large databases and digitised images – and even online auction sites – make it a practical possibility to do work at a level which was almost unthinkable only a short time ago.
