A Sensational Encounter with High Socialist China is a recollection of the historic visit of fourteen American students (and one Canadian) to China in 1971. The visit was one of the first approved for American scholars after the Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949 and occurred prior to President Nixon’s famous trip (as well as that of a second group of scholars) in 1972. One of these students, Paul Pickowicz, kept a journal and photographically documented the trip. This book is a personal account of the events leading up to their visa approvals as well as those that occurred during the journey itself. The five senses are used to connect the reader to his experience and are placed in the context of a theatrical production. Paul A. Van Dyke’s new book, Whampoa and the Canton Trade: Life and Death in a Chinese Port, 1700–1842, authoritatively corrects misconceptions about how the Qing government treated foreigners when it controlled all trade in the Guangzhou port. Van Dyke reappraises the role of Whampoa in the system—a port twenty kilometres away from Guangzhou—and reassesses the government’s attitude towards foreigners, which was much more accommodating than previous research suggested. In fact, Van Dyke shows that foreigners were not bound by local laws and were given freedom of movement around Whampoa and Canton to the extent that they were treated with leniency even when found in off-limit places. The Sublime Object of Orientalism proposes that globalised Asian physical cultural practices such as taiji, qigong, yoga, and meditation can be understood by examining the intimate connection between Western orientalism and the Romantic aesthetic notion of the sublime. The book recasts ‘orientalist physical culture’ as practices animated by the sublime and argues that this relationship is stronger than has hitherto been recognised by commentators. Bowman combines new readings of philosophers and cultural critics such as Slavoj Žižek and Jane Iwamura with analyses of film, media, and Asian physical practices and their entrepreneurial forms to shed light on the quest to articulate a philosophy of orientalist physical culture. He also explores ways to make sense of orientalist physical culture in the contemporary world and evaluate the often-problematic ideologies that circulate around these cultural practices without either uncritically accepting their value or rejecting them outright.

為了解經濟成長與實質匯率之長期關係，本研究利用Pesaran, Shin and Smith（2001）之邊界檢定法加以驗證Balassa-Samuelson假說，在APEC中16個會員國之適用性。根據模型推導 有關經濟成長此一變數可分別以相對每人平均GDP水準值，亦即相對水準效果；或兩國間每人平均GDP之相對成長率，亦即相對成長效果，進行實證分析。結果顯示若同時考慮相對水準效果與成長效果，則在APEC會員國中僅有紐西蘭之經濟成長與實質匯率呈現雙向因果關係；澳大利亞、香港、馬來西亞顯示實質匯率為經濟成長之因變數。 至於墨西哥、巴布亞新幾內亞、新加坡、台灣則呈現經濟成長為實質匯率之因變數，顯示經濟成長表現對實質匯率走勢有顯著影響。惟若擇一考量相對水準效果或相對成長效果，則在APEC會員國中將有澳大利亞、加拿大、智利、墨西哥、紐西蘭、巴布亞新幾內亞、菲律賓、新加坡、泰國、台灣等10個經濟體系之經濟成長與實質匯率間呈現雙向因果關係；其餘者如中國大陸、香港、印尼、日本、韓國、馬來西亞等呈現實質匯率影響經濟成長表現，即匯率為經濟成長之因變數。若比較APEC會員國經濟成長之相對水準效果與相對成長效果檢定結果，發現實質匯率與相對成長效果之因果關係，在多數國家呈現顯著。而實質匯率與相對水準效果之因果影響關係則較不明顯。
