This volume challenges previous views of social organization focused on elites by offering innovative perspectives on 'power from below.' Using a variety of archaeological, anthropological, and historical data to question traditional narratives of complexity as inextricably linked to top-down power structures, it exemplifies how commoners have developed strategies to sustain non-hierarchical networks and contest the rise of inequalities. Through case studies from around the world – ranging from Europe to New Guinea, and from Mesoamerica to China – an international team of contributors explores the diverse and dynamic nature of power relations in premodern societies. The theoretical models discussed throughout the volume include a reassessment of key concepts such as heterarchy, collective action, and resistance. Thus, the book adds considerable nuance to our understanding of power in the past, and also opens new avenues of reflection that can help inform discussions about our collectiv

Recent observational results from space- and ground-based telescopes have demonstrated that a unified approach to the relationships between solar and stellar magnetism is necessary to advance our understanding of magnetic fields. The Proceedings of IAU Symposium 354 present recent results and discussions of emerging topics, including: magnetic field diagnostics using high-resolution observation; initial data from ALMA, Chinese Radio Spectroheliograph and other instruments; the detection of stellar magnetospheres; and the detailed mapping of magnetic fields on the surface of stars using new unique instrumentation. These observations stimulate comparisons of solar and stellar results, and improve our understanding of how surface magnetic structures and their evolution are related to the generation of magnetic fields by dynamos in solar and stellar interiors. This volume benefits graduate students and researchers interested in the recent advances and key problems of solar and stellar magn

Structural Geology: A Quantitative Introduction
滿額折
出版日:2020/07/31 作者:David D. Pollard  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  裝訂:精裝
Tackling structural geology problems today requires a quantitative understanding of the underlying physical principles, and the ability to apply mathematical models to deformation processes within the Earth. Accessible yet rigorous, this unique textbook demonstrates how to approach structural geology quantitatively using calculus and mechanics, and prepares students to interface with professional geophysicists and engineers who appreciate and utilize the same tools and computational methods to solve multidisciplinary problems. Clearly explained methods are used throughout the book to quantify field data, set up mathematical models for the formation of structures, and compare model results to field observations. An extensive online package of coordinated laboratory exercises enables students to consolidate their learning and put it into practice by analyzing structural data and building insightful models. Designed for single-semester undergraduate courses, this pioneering text prepares

Colonization and Subalternity in Classical Greece:Experience of the Nonelite Population
90 折
出版日:2020/03/26 作者:Gabriel Zuchtriegel  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  裝訂:平裝
In this book, Gabriel Zuchtriegel explores and reconstructs the unwritten history of Classical Greece - the experience of nonelite colonial populations. Using postcolonial critical methods to analyze Greek settlements and their hinterlands of the fifth and fourth centuries BC, he reconstructs the social and economic structures in which exploitation, violence, and subjugation were implicit. He mines literary sources and inscriptions, as well as archaeological and data from excavations and field surveys, much of it published here for the first time, that offer new insights into the lives and status of nonelite populations in Greek colonies. Zuchtriegel demonstrates that Greece's colonial experience has far-reaching implications beyond the study of archaeology and ancient history. As reflected in foundational texts such as Plato's 'Laws' and Aristotle's 'Politics', the ideology that sustained Greek colonialism is still felt in many Western societies.
