Mathematics of Discrete Structures for Computer Science

Many historians of insurance have commented on the disconnect between the rise of English life insurance companies in the early eighteenth century and the mathematics behind the sound pricing of life insurance products that was developed at about the same time. Insurance and annuity promoters typically ignored this mathematical work. Bellhouse explores this issue, and shows that the early mathematical work was not motivated by insurance but instead by the fair valuation of life contingent contracts related to property. Even the work of the mathematician James Dodson in the creation of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, offering sound actuarially based premiums, did not change the industry in any significant way. The tipping point was a crisis in 1770 in which the philosopher and mathematician Richard Price, as well as other mathematicians, showed that a dozen or more recently formed annuity societies could not meet their financial obligations and were inviable.

STEM―where we see it, how we use it, and why you should careDiscover how math is part of our daily lives with Everyday STEM Math―Applied Math.Mathematics is not just working out sums and equations for school―it's all around us and used in everyday situations. From photography and cooking to ballet and flower arranging―math is the building block of everything! Discover how watching rabbits and bees developed into a famous sequence, witness the ancient Egyptians apply math to pyramid building, and meet the mathematicians who brought numbers and symbols to life. A "try this at home" section shows readers how math helps you to read minds and how a sequence can turn you into an artist. With easy-to-understand text written by math expert Lou Abercrombie, fun callouts, and lots of colorful artworks, photos, and diagrams, readers can best explore where we encounter math and why it’s even important at all.The Everyday STEM series makes science relevant to tweens. Instead of telling kids STEM is

Joseph Banks is one of the most significant figures of the English Enlightenment. This book places his work in promoting 'imperial science', in the context of the consolidation of the British State during a time of extraordinary upheaval. The American, French and Industrial Revolutions unleashed intense and dramatic change, placing growing pressure on the British state and increasing its need for expert advice on scientific matters. This was largely provided by Banks, who used his personal networks and systems of patronage to integrate scientific concerns with the complex machinery of government. In this book, originally published in 1998, Gascoigne skilfully draws out the rich detail of Banks' life within the broader political framework, and shows how imperial concerns prompted interest in the possible uses of science for economic and strategic gain. This is an important examination of the British State during a time of change and upheaval.

This Element is intended for students and practitioners as a gentle and intuitive introduction to the field of discrete-time yield curve modelling. I strive to be as comprehensive as possible, while still adhering to the overall premise of putting a strong focus on practical applications. In addition to a thorough description of the Nelson-Siegel family of model, the Element contains a section on the intuitive relationship between P and Q measures, one on how the structure of a Nelson-Siegel model can be retained in the arbitrage-free framework, and a dedicated section that provides a detailed explanation for the Joslin, Singleton, and Zhu (2011) model.
