Statistical Graphics Procedures by Example

Numerical Methods in Finance has emerged as a discipline at the intersection of probability theory, finance and numerical analysis. This book, based on lectures given at the Newton Institute as part of a broader programme, describes a wide variety of numerical methods used in financial analysis: computation of option prices, especially of American option prices, by finite difference and other methods; numerical solution of portfolio management strategies; statistical procedures; identification of models; Monte Carlo methods; and numerical implications of stochastic volatilities. Articles have been written in a pedagogic style and made reasonably self-contained, covering both mathematical matters and practical issues in numerical problems. Thus the book has something to offer economists, probabilists and applied mathematicians working in finance.

A key problem in practical image processing is that of detecting certain features in a noisy image. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques can be very effective in such situations, and this book gives a detailed account of the use of ANOVA in statistical image processing. The book begins by describing the statistical representation of images in the various ANOVA models. A number of computationally efficient algorithms and techniques are then presented, to deal with such problems as line, edge and object detection, as well as image restoration and enhancement. By describing the basic principles of these techniques, and showing their use in specific situations, the book will facilitate the design of new algorithms for particular applications. It will be of great interest to graduate students and engineers in the field of image processing and pattern recognition.
