Basic Structures of Reality

Originally written over a period from about 1979 to the early 1980s, the first in the trilogy was inspired by the theatre of the absurd and focused on the nature of human relationships across the fabric of space-time. The second, written in the late 1980s and the following early 1990s, was focused on repercussions of events across space-time; and then the third, written in 2000 and after, more or less concludes the trilogy with elements of the preceding two interwoven and coming to grips with the vicissitudes of life.

Rong-an Chen has devoted himself to the research of Chinese classifiers for forty years, and the ultimate achievement is the publication of a dictionary discussing the usage of Chinese classifiers in ancient time. There has been English dictionary of contemporary Chinese measure words in the market, but there is not any English dictionary talking about ancient Chinese classifiers. The absence of such a kind of dictionary in the book stores motivates him to write this dictionary. The document data collected in this dictionary begins from the oracle bone inscription in the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC) to 1949A.D., when the famous Chinese author Lao She’s (老舍) article《四世同堂》was written. This volume is the most extensive social and cultural history of twentieth-century Huangmei Opera to date. A regional Chinese theater originating in the Anqing countryside, Huangmei Opera gained popularity with the success of the 1950s play and movie, Tianxian pei 天仙配 (Married to a Heavenly Immortal). Through a case study of this work, the author juxtaposes the complex process of rewriting and revising the play and movie against the rapidly changing cultural and ideological climate of the Communist theater reform movement. As a result, the traditional theme of filial piety becomes a struggle over class and free love. This volume features a full translation of the original play and its revision in the 1950s, as well as selected articles by scriptwriters, directors, performers, and critics.
