In 1882 the University of Cambridge accepted a bequest of £5,000 from the writer John Frederick Stanford (1815–1880) for the purpose of creating a dictionary of loan words found in English. This volume, first published in 1892, was the result. Charles Augustus Fennell (1843–1916), a classicist and Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge was responsible for selecting the words for inclusion. Following criteria based on Stanford's own notes, the definition of 'anglicised words' is very broad, including words loaned from European languages which entered common use in English after 1470 as well as loans from further afield. Each entry includes the meaning of the word in its original language and historical examples of usage, showing how the meanings of anglicised words have changed subtly over time. The book reveals the dramatic expansion of English vocabulary that resulted from the adoption of these words.

Hausa is an African language originating in Niger and northern Nigeria and spoken widely in West and Central Africa as a trading language. This anthology of Hausa texts (mainly Islamic religious verse and historical narratives) was the first publication supported by the short-lived Hausa Association, formed in 1891 to promote the study of the Hausa language and people. Under its aegis the Reverend C. H. Robinson went on to produce a Hausa Grammar in 1897 and a Dictionary in 1899, making great advances in Western knowledge of the language, despite the fact that some in the field criticised him for his relatively short exposure to Hausa-speaking countries. With facsimile reproductions of the manuscripts at actual size, the texts collected in this book were the first published specimens of Hausa writing. Each text is transcribed into in roman script and an English translation is given on facing pages.

Somali is one of the Cushitic family of languages spoken in the horn of Africa and the official language of Somalia. This practical grammar, published in 1905, was prepared by J. W. C. Kirk, who first learnt to speak the language during his service with Somali troops during the British Empire's failed attempt in 1902–1904 to wrest control of the region from the Dervish state under Muhammad Abdullah Hassan. His unique knowledge of the interior of the country and the different tribes making up the population meant that Kirk's insights were invaluable in advancing scholarly knowledge in the West. Perhaps as importantly, Kirk also records a number of literary examples with his translations of Somali stories and songs. Another appendix explores the dialects of the Midgan (or Madhiban) and Yibir, both minority tribes who kept their languages secret from mainstream Somali society.

After visiting Ethiopia on diplomatic missions in 1906 and 1907 Armbruster published this three-volume reference work on colloquial, spoken Amharic between 1908 and 1920. Armbruster's study of Amharic was one of the first to be written in English, and exemplifies the shift among linguists away from the formal, classics-based style of earlier reference grammars towards a focus on colloquial speech and communication. The examples are drawn from direct knowledge of the contemporary language, unlike similar works of the period which were often based on centuries-old Ethiopian Orthodox biblical texts. Volume 2, published in 1910, is an English–Amharic vocabulary, with guidance on pronunciation and idiomatic Amharic translations of English phrases and sentences.

Originally published by Cambridge in 1947, the manuscript upon which this volume is based lay dormant between the time of its creation and 1854, when it was discovered in an office of the Supreme Court in New South Wales. Whilst it is a concise account, written by the little-known Irish clergyman Thomas Campbell (1733–1795), it is notable for its frank description of encounters with Samuel Johnson. Campbell is unsparing in relating the crass aspects of Johnson's behaviour, such as his temperamentality and use of bad language, along with his manifold qualities. The text is consummately edited by James L. Clifford, with extensive notes, and contains a highly readable introduction by S. C. Roberts. It will be of value to anyone with an interest in Samuel Johnson, and the eighteenth-century literary milieu.

It contains the first three books of the History, covering the causes of the war (which began in 431 B.C.E.), and continuing up to the Athenian purification of Delos in 425 B.C.E. The text and apparatus closely follow Bekker's 1821 critical edition. However, Arnold freshly collated a number of Greek manuscripts, including the important tenth-century Laurentian manuscript C for Book 3, which led to some revision of Bekker's text. Arnold's major contribution to Thucydidean scholarship lies in the detailed topographical and historical notes accompanying the text, which explain its geographical and political background. For many generations Arnold's work has provided an indispensable guide through the complex geo-political context of the History, enabling students to appreciate its narrative, language and place in historiography.

Andrew Marvell was born in 1621 and lived through the English Civil War, and the restoration of the monarchy. He was politically active in Parliament and international diplomacy to varying degrees during his lifetime, but is best known for his verse. Dongolese is one of the dialects spoken by the Nubian peoples of the Sudan. Since it is a spoken and not a written language, there are difficulties in the way of collecting adequate material; the position is further complicated by the fact that most Nubians are bilingual and frequently lapse into Arabic when talking to a foreigner. Despite these obstacles, the late C. J. Armbruster was able, as an official of the Sudan Service in Dongola, to amass a great deal of material for investigation. This 1965 book is the result of years of close observation and analysis of the Dongolese conversations in which the author took part, or to which he attended; it is a monumental and authoritative work.

Sir Ernest Alfred Thompson Wallis Budge (1857–1934) was a prominent English Egyptologist who was Keeper of the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities in the British Museum between 1893 and 1924. Although better known for his contributions to Egyptology, Budge was also a scholar of the ancient Assyrian language, which he first learnt in 1874. This book, first published in 1880, contains cuneiform inscriptions from artefacts in the British Museum, relating to the Assyrian king Esarhaddon (reigned c.681–669 BCE). They recount Esarhaddon's royal titles, describe his military campaigns in modern Iran and Egypt, and list the monumental buildings in Babylon rebuilt during his reign. Budge provides transliterations and English translations, a vocabulary, and a list of texts consulted. This was the first scholarly study of Esarhaddon, and some of Budge's translations proved controversial.
