本書以三個不同場景中的展演類西江苗族服飾設計為研究個案，以曾經的設計作品開篇，又以經過“人類學思考”的設計作品結尾，探討在全球化時代背景下傳統民族服飾在中國服裝設計文化中的呈現，解釋雖有差異但卻相對穩定的展演類民族服飾設計現狀。全書在內容上既觀照展演類民族服飾設計，也探討傳統民族服飾的當代發展，同時對保護和弘揚民族服飾珍貴文化遺產進行再思考。

本書的編寫方式是以廣州美術學院品牌包裝設計課程為依託，為適應市場發展需求，以課題教學替代課程教學，全書分四個章節，分別對應課題教學與訓練的四個階段，每個階段有明確的課題訓練要求，並以清單的形式規範作業，每個階段的作業都不是孤立的，而是圍繞各自的選題方向將之聯繫起來。本書所有圖例，均出自廣州美術學院郭湘黔品牌包裝工作室、本科生和研究生的課題研究作品。
