Why is Selflessness a way to Wisdom? This book is a real story, but more than that it is also a book for academic life education purpose. It first contains real stories from eleven suicide prevention telephone hotline volunteers of the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong (SBHK) who had been serving for more than 25 years. They came from all walks of life such as engineer, businessman, teacher, nurses and housewife. There were episodes of unforgettable conversation between volunteers and clients, stories of how volunteer managed the situation when a suicide attempt was ongoing at the other end of the phone. Based on these stories, the author, who are also a long-serving volunteers of SBHK himself, combined with several academic references to explore relationships between empathy, selflessness, virtues, transcendence, wisdom and Eudaimonia (ultimate happiness) which human being should be aware of and to try to understand. This study tests the factors of transaction costs (TC) and resource-based views (RBV) to explain the MNEs’ entry decisions in China. By using large firm-level data from China, I show in this paper that variables related to internal uncertainty (e.g., management) and firm-specific assets tend to affect MNEs’ entry decisions in a way that is consistent with the transaction cost logic; that is, the higher degree of internal uncertainty, the MNEs may require more control over the foreign facilities or the JV. On the other hand, those variables related to external uncertainty (e.g., marketing) and intangible assets tend to conform to the resource-based view, which means higher external uncertainty would cause the MNEs to leverage the resources or local experience of local partners. This suggests that MNEs may need complementary resources from local partners to reduce the external uncertainty and enhance the value of their intangible resources.

This study attempts to analyze systematically the rationale, evolution, and consequences of Chiang Kai-shek's "unity before resistance" doctrine, which was the basis of Nanking's appeasement policy. The author argues that there were a number of independent variables that influenced Nanking's attitude toward Japan: 1) the internal disintegration of China; 2) factional conflicts within the Kuomintang; 3) ineffective administration; 4) the vicissitudes of nationalism; 5) the material backwardness of China; and 6) international mediation. All of these factors were interrelated. The intervening variables were Chiang Kai-shek's personality, his patterns of political behavior, his way of ruling, and his perception of internal and external crises. Despite the increase of research investigating various aspects of the drug problem in Hong Kong in the past decade, little was known about the pathway to continuous drug use or recovery of chronic drug abusers. This book reports upon a pioneer longitudinal study of chronic drug abusers in Hong Kong that used an analytical framework consisting of sociological, psychological and treatment variables to explore the protective and risk factors affecting the relapse or abstinence of chronic drug abusers. The findings of the study have significant implications for theories of drug use and rehabilitation, especially highlighting the roles of social capital, self-efficacy, short-term abstinence and harm reduction in the chronic drug abuser’s road to recovery.

The Silk Manuscripts from Zidanku, Changsha (Hunan), are the only pre-Imperial Chinese manuscripts on silk found to-date. Candlestick technical analysis is an old trading technique that tracks the short-term price movements by employing the relationship between open, high, low, and close prices. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the predictive power of candlestick trading strategies by using the Taiwan 151 component stocks daily data for the period from 2 January 1992 to 31 December 2009. The main contribution of this thesis is using a fourprice- level approach to categorize the single-line patterns constructed by candlestick charting in a systematical manner. The approach adopted in this thesis permits us to release for the limitation of recognition in a manner not previously possible. Moreover, we not only consider transaction costs and risk but also mitigate data-snooping problems conscientiously by several appropriate methods, including the bootstrap methodology and sub-sample and out-of-sample tests. 即時定量聚合酶連鎖反應 (real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, real-time qPCR) 為具高特異性且可快速、大量定量的分析方法，為目前退伍軍人菌檢測主要之發展方向。冷卻 水塔為退伍軍人菌重要滋生源，但水塔中累積許多有機物與鐵銹，這些均可能抑制real-time qPCR反應，若未能去除抑制物干擾，則可能低估real-time qPCR檢測結果。本研究比較QiAamp DNA mini kit (Q) 與freeze-thaw/phenol-chloroform (FT-PC) 兩種DNA萃取方法，以及此兩種方法加上膠體管柱 (Sepharose 4B gel column, G) 純化對PCR抑制物的移除、分離的DNA純度及DNA產量之影響；另亦評估Q、Q/G、FT-PC及FT-PC/G結合稀釋作用後所得real-time qPCR抑制情形以及其相對應之L. pneumophila濃度。結果發現：(i) 對腐植酸與鐵離子共存樣本，以Q及FT-PC均可去除≦100 μg/mL腐植酸至低於偵測下限 (1 μg/mL)；(ii) 而不論鐵離子單獨或與腐植酸共存的樣本，Q均可得獲得最高DNA產量 (2.53~3.36; 6.58~6.79 μg/mL)，其次為FT-PC (2.00~2.37; 3.90~4.33 μg/mL)，Q/G (1.15~1.27; 3.21~3.33 μg/mL) 及FT-PC/G (0.76~0.80; 1.77~1.85 μg/mL)；(iii) 四種方法均可獲得純度佳的DNA (A260/A280=1.5-2.0)；(iv) 以G純化DNA無法進一步改善PCR抑制情形，而稀釋作用則可有效去除以Q、Q/G以及FT-PC/G所得DNA之PCR抑制情形。及 (v) 比較四種處理方法結合不同稀釋倍數於real-time qPCR檢測L. pneumophila濃度之結果發現：只含鐵離子的樣本以Q萃取加上10倍或100倍的稀釋可得最接近起使添加之細菌濃度值；而鐵離子與腐植酸共存之樣本，最佳之處理程序則為Q或Q/G分離DNA再加上10倍或100倍的稀釋。由於Q/G程序較複雜且會造成部分DNA損失，因此本研究建議以Q萃取法加上10倍或100倍稀釋為以real-time qPCR檢測含

Evolution of language has evolved at multiple levels—from changes in the cognitive processes by which language is acquired in the individual, to language change by diffusion of acquired linguistic features across populations of individuals, to the emergence of linguistic features over phylogenetic time scales. Evolution of language at each of these levels interacts with that at each other level.
