Hastings Rashdall (1858–1924) first published The Universities of Europe in the Middle Ages in 1895. It has remained one of the best-known studies of the great medieval universities for over a century. Volume 2 Part 2 is a study of the medieval universities of England with special focus on the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Rashdall provides an in-depth analysis of their origins and constitutions, institutional development, curriculum and college systems. There are additional sections on English student life; student numbers and intake; universities' relationships with local towns; relationships with local ecclesiastical structures; and a chapter on the importance of the university of Oxford in medieval thought. Rashdall's study was one of the first comparative works on the subject. This 1913 book was considered ground-breaking on first publication. While there are few documentary sources for Anglo-Saxon history, Major uses his intimate knowledge of the geography of the West County to re-interpret the surviving records. By examining physical and archaeological evidence, he sheds new light on the foundation and development of the kingdom of Wessex. He also uses modern boundaries, place names and local traditions, previously overlooked by scholars, to understand how Wessex history was shaped. He shows how the kingdom was first established, and its boundaries extended through warfare with its neighbours, between the late fifth to eighth centuries. Thereafter, famously led by Alfred the Great, Wessex fought and survived Viking invasions; but eventually fell to the Normans in 1066. Although much new archaeological evidence has been uncovered since the book was written, it continues to demonstrate the significance of landscape and folklore study to history.

Andrew Marvell was born in 1621 and lived through the English Civil War, and the restoration of the monarchy. He was politically active in Parliament and international diplomacy to varying degrees during his lifetime, but is best known for his verse. Marvell's poetry has been more appreciated since his death in 1677, with increased favourable comparisons with contemporaries such as Doone. The political upheavals that Marvell lived through undoubtedly shaped his work and the subtleties of his literature are explored in this critique in reference to his conjectured and documented political activity at the time of writing. Analysis of Marvell's prose is explored to 'illuminate the development of the English language during one of its most crucial periods'. Originally published in 1980, this was the first biography of William Wilkins, the regency architect whose reputation once rivalled that of Nash and who is probably the best known today as the designer of the National Gallery in London. He charts his development from mathematics student at Cambridge to Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy; he notes the technical innovations that affected his designs; he considers political and social ideas that lay behind his work; and he examines his friendships with influential figures.

Ezra Pound was deeply engaged with the avant-garde art scene in London and Paris during the early twentieth century. Within this volume, Professor N. H. Fletcher introduces the less expert reader to these impressive developments in the study of cloud physics, whilst also constructing an indispensable collection of references for those with a more concentrated interest in the field. In 1887, when the first volume of this work was published, Greek epigraphy was not systematically studied or taught in English universities, and the book was specifically written to supply a need for 'a popular work, giving a classification of Greek inscriptions according to their age, country and subject, and a selection of texts by way of samples, under each class'. The first volume contains a historical sketch of the Greek alphabet and a sequence of inscriptions showing its development across the Mediterranean area and Asia Minor until the end of the fifth century CE. The Literary and Linguistic Computing Centre was established in the University of Cambridge in 1964. Bespiegelingen, a long verse work (66531 words), contains a rationale of the doctrine underlying many of Vondel's best-known dramatic works. Because of this, and due to its length and the monumental development of its argument it has been comparatively little studied, Bespiegelingen presented ideal material for analysis by computer. Lucifer, generally considered to be Vondel's masterpiece, was an obvious choice to head the list of original plays.
