Introduction to Computing

Comprehensive and engaging, this textbook introduces students not only to foundational sociological work, but also to insights from contemporary sociological theory and research. This combined approac

Since the financial crisis of 2007 to 2009 the role of the company in society, especially the role of publicly traded companies, has acquired a political salience that was largely absent in the decade

Approximate groups have shot to prominence in recent years, driven both by rapid progress in the field itself and by a varied and expanding range of applications. This text collects, for the first time in book form, the main concepts and techniques into a single, self-contained introduction. The author presents a number of recent developments in the field, including an exposition of his recent result classifying nilpotent approximate groups. The book also features a considerable amount of previously unpublished material, as well as numerous exercises and motivating examples. It closes with a substantial chapter on applications, including an exposition of Breuillard, Green and Tao's celebrated approximate-group proof of Gromov's theorem on groups of polynomial growth. Written by an author who is at the forefront of both researching and teaching this topic, this text will be useful to advanced students and to researchers working in approximate groups and related areas.

A student-friendly style, over 100 illustrations, and numerous exercises are brought together in this textbook for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in physics and mathematics. Lewis Ryder develops the theory of general relativity in detail. Covering the core topics of black holes, gravitational radiation, and cosmology, he provides an overview of general relativity and its modern ramifications. The book contains chapters on gravitational radiation, cosmology, and connections between general relativity and the fundamental physics of the microworld. It explains the geometry of curved spaces and contains key solutions of Einstein's equations - the Schwarzschild and Kerr solutions. Mathematical calculations are worked out in detail, so students can develop an intuitive understanding of the subject, as well as learn how to perform calculations. The book also includes topics concerned with the relation between general relativity and other areas of fundamental physics. S

Optical lenses have many important applications, from telescopes and spectacles, to microscopes and lasers. This concise, introductory book provides an overview of the subtle art of lens design. It covers the fundamental, optical theory, and the practical methods and tools employed in lens design, in a succinct and accessible manner. Topics covered include first-order optics, optical aberrations, achromatic doublets, optical relays, lens tolerances, designing with off-the-shelf lenses, miniature lenses, and zoom lenses. Covering all the key concepts of lens design, and providing suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter, this book is an essential resource for graduate students working in optics and photonics, in addition to engineers and technicians working in the optics and imaging industries.

This is a text that develops calculus 'from scratch', with complete rigorous arguments. Its aim is to introduce the reader not only to the basic facts about calculus but, as importantly, to mathematic

The classic first book on declarer play at bridge, covering the topic with clarity, skill and humor. More than fifty years after its first publication, this book has been revised and updated to bring it into line with modern methods of play and bridge education.
