Memories are still vivid on the incident: on 29 January 2010, a five-storey building at 45J Ma Tau Wai Road, To Kwa Wan, Hong Kong collapsed, causing four deaths and two injuries. The tragedy has raised public concerns about the safety of many of Hong Kong's old and dilapidated buildings. Realising that the presence of ageing buildings lacking proper care and maintenance poses potential threats to residents and the public at large, since 2012, the Buildings Department has implemented the Mandatory Building Inspection Scheme (MBIS) to carry out inspection and rectification works for buildings aged 30 years or above. This book, as a pioneer to review and examine the statistics and distributions of the aged buildings in Hong Kong, provides critical insights on the building decay and neglect problems. This volume is the most extensive social and cultural history of twentieth-century Huangmei Opera to date. A regional Chinese theater originating in the Anqing countryside, Huangmei Opera gained popularity with the success of the 1950s play and movie, Tianxian pei 天仙配 (Married to a Heavenly Immortal). Through a case study of this work, the author juxtaposes the complex process of rewriting and revising the play and movie against the rapidly changing cultural and ideological climate of the Communist theater reform movement. As a result, the traditional theme of filial piety becomes a struggle over class and free love. This book closely examines texts from Chinese and Western traditions that hold up ethics as the inviolable ground of human existence, as well as those that regard ethics with suspicion. The negative notion of morality contends that because ethics cannot be divorced from questions of belonging and identity, there is a danger that it can be nudged into the domain of the unethical, since ethical virtues can become properties to be possessed with which the recognition of others is solicited. Ethics thus fosters the very egoism it hopes to transcend, and risks excluding the unfamiliar and the stranger. The author argues inspirationally that the unethical underbelly of ethics must be recognized in order to ensure that it remains vibrant.

This study attempts to analyze systematically the rationale, evolution, and consequences of Chiang Kai-shek's "unity before resistance" doctrine, which was the basis of Nanking's appeasement policy. The author argues that there were a number of independent variables that influenced Nanking's attitude toward Japan: 1) the internal disintegration of China; 2) factional conflicts within the Kuomintang; 3) ineffective administration; 4) the vicissitudes of nationalism; 5) the material backwardness of China; and 6) international mediation. All of these factors were interrelated. The intervening variables were Chiang Kai-shek's personality, his patterns of political behavior, his way of ruling, and his perception of internal and external crises. Transforming History examines the profound transformation of historical thought and practice of writing history from the late Qing through the mid-twentieth century.
