Many excellent books have been written for administrators about motivating faculty. Some books have been written about being an academic. Books have been written about the reward system. Others have been written on improving student learning. Some books have been written on measuring effective teaching. Some books are written only for administrators; others, only for individual faculty. None have been written so as to integrate all of these and address them as a whole. This volume provides a timely discussion on the issues pondering in the minds of many newly recruited faculty and administrators—to uncover the real culture and offer suggestions on how to create a culture to nurture student learning; and to explore the issue of what is research-in-teaching. With improving student learning as the ultimate goal, the author suggests many concrete ways to change the teaching practice and, more importantly, the culture of a university. 自國際電信聯盟（ITU）自2005年提出「物聯網（Internet of Things，IoT」一詞，全球主要國家包含英國、美國、日本、韓國及中國大陸紛紛將物聯網納入國家發展戰略藍圖規劃之一，部分國家合作之組織與聯盟已超出單一國家層級，各先進國家皆欲藉物聯網技術建立全球技術戰略制高點。

The papers in this publication are studies on the Chinese communicity in Malaysia in relation to developments in Southeast Asia. The formation of Chinese communities in the region were established by waves of migration into the region over periods of time. However, given the proximity to China, there has been and there will always be the reminder of an exogenous influence, the China factor, on the Chinese communities in the region. In fact the Xinhua News Agency from the People's Republic of China reported recently, with pride, that there are now an estimated forty five million Overseas Chinese all over the world. Studies as presented by the authors indicate the diversity of the Chinese community in Malaysia. Often the community is mistakenly perceived as a monolithic entity. The truth could not be more different. The community comprise minority groups such as Chinese Muslims, Chinese Christians and Peranakans, besides the common perception of only Buddhists and Taoists. Negotiating Religion in Modern China traces the history of the Chinese state's relationship with religion from 1900 to 1937. The revolutionary regime condemned religious practice in the early twentieth century, suppressing "superstitious" belief in favor of a secular, more enlightened society. Drawing on newspapers and unpublished official documents, this book focuses on the case of Guangzhou, largely because of the city's sustained involvement in the revolutionary quest for a "new" China. The author pays particular attention to the implementation of policy and citizens' attempts at adaptation and resistance.

Contemporary Chinese art is nowadays a subject area widely taught and researched in academic and non-academic publications, but it has not yet been studied by 'localizing' the research in specific cultural areas within the Chinese world. Selecting Hong Kong for a first such study was an obvious choice, since Hong Kong culture has had for already quite a long time very specific features which have put it apart from the generally accepted definition of Chinese national culture. Although it is not a survey of 'Hong Kong art,' as such a study would demand many more books, the works of about eighty artists working in Hong Kong (and sometimes outside) have been analyzed and contextualized in these pages.

THE FLOWER PRINCESS (Dae Neui Fa or Din?hua in Mandarin) has become the most renowned Cantonese Opera since its 1957 premier in Hong Kong. The opera is a serious political drama played out between the Han and non-Han following the fall of the Ming dynasty, and the plot pits romantic love against the lofty Confucian ideals of social hierarchy and moral rectitude. This is the first complete English translation of the opera, featuring text, song titles, speech types, and choreographic and stage setting. It also contains a foreword by Pak Suet Sin (Bai Xuexian), the celebrated Cantonese Opera actress who created the role of the Princess in the original production.

As a Cultural construct, gender is fictional and imagined, yet its ideological and representational effects on the formation of self and identity are quite real. The fiction behind the fictional, which many accepts as truth, is at the core of what is most intriguing about the problem of gender. Critiquing this narrative, Gender, Discourse, and the Self in Literature unravels the strategies that writers and filmmakers adopt in their (de)construction of the gendered self in three Chinese communities: mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. 在那戒嚴和嚴密的監視之下，他怎能逃離台灣，為什麼要冒死一試？ 繼1972年出版《自由的滋味》，歷經漫長的37年， 彭明敏教授終於親自交待當年那一段外界不明的歷史秘辛！ 我的英文回憶錄“A Taste of Freedom”於一九七二年出版，其漢文版《自由的滋味》也於一九八三年間問世，但我在其中以及在其他任何場合都對於如何離開台灣，未曾提及，故讀者和聽者也莫不對此表示不解和不滿。我所以保持沉默，有其原因的。 起初覺得台灣內部還有許多因受迫害而極欲逃亡尋求自由者，他們可以與我相同方式脫出，若我公開說明，就等於提醒台灣當局如何預防此事再度發生，也等於杜絕那些被迫害者到外國尋得自由的可能，於心不忍。 亦確有人基於其人生哲學「為善不欲人知」，寧願永遠隱藏其所為。此以美國人居多，例如對我幫助最大的Thornberry牧師因被國民黨誣告為「恐怖份子」，其後二十年美國政府對其拒發美國護照，在此長期間無法踏出美國一步，但對此冤枉默默無一怨言，外人不知有此事，連我也於三十數年後才知道。 一些「東方人」反而僅做了一點事就在我未說明以前便大吹大擂，誇張吹噓（誇言「東方精神文化」優於「西方物質文明」者，請注意）。其他大多有關人士則因政治考慮或職位關係，不便透露姓名身分，也不願洩露其所扮演的角色。 轉瞬間近四十年了。世人或許認為世界情勢已經大變，實無再守密的必要。可是幾乎難以置信的，至今仍有有關人士顧慮到台灣和中國當局的可能反應，還是不願露身。其中也有已經去逝者，但其遺族都要尊重先人的意思（上述顧慮有無根基，純是主觀感覺，別人無法置喙的）。 不論如何，脫出台灣經過的真相，太久不明，主要應歸過於我自己，但不是我故作神秘，而是環境所致。…… －－彭明敏
