Evolution of language has evolved at multiple levels—from changes in the cognitive processes by which language is acquired in the individual, to language change by diffusion of acquired linguistic features across populations of individuals, to the emergence of linguistic features over phylogenetic time scales. Evolution of language at each of these levels interacts with that at each other level. This volume is a collection of essays by noted researchers from diverse fields that deals with a broad spectrum of issues in the study of language evolution. The principle topics addressed here include: the genetic and cognitive bases for the phylogenetic emergence of language; several distinct accounts of the underlying cognitive processes by which children learn to acquire language; a critique of the methods employed by historical linguists in the last century; the modeling of language evolution using mathematical and computational techniques; discussions on the complexity of language.

This collection of selected works by Professor Albert H.Y. Chen shows the contours of the author’s scholarship as it developed over 35 years of his academic career, from 1984 to the present. The return of Macao from the Portuguese administration to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999 marks the beginning of its transformation in the 21st century. Proportionality is a German, and thus continental European, concept in public law that is applied by both the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). Candlestick technical analysis is an old trading technique that tracks the short-term price movements by employing the relationship between open, high, low, and close prices. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the predictive power of candlestick trading strategies by using the Taiwan 151 component stocks daily data for the period from 2 January 1992 to 31 December 2009. The main contribution of this thesis is using a fourprice- level approach to categorize the single-line patterns constructed by candlestick charting in a systematical manner. The approach adopted in this thesis permits us to release for the limitation of recognition in a manner not previously possible. Moreover, we not only consider transaction costs and risk but also mitigate data-snooping problems conscientiously by several appropriate methods, including the bootstrap methodology and sub-sample and out-of-sample tests.
