1915年，余清芳、羅俊和江定等人不滿日本殖民政府統治，意圖發動武裝抗爭，建立自己的領導政權，但因抗軍不敵日本的機關槍和大砲，死傷慘重。一吧哖事件從余清芳等人開始策畫起事，到江定等人被審判處死，前後約兩年的時間裡，有1957位臺灣人被逮捕──其中遭起訴者1482人，被判處死刑者更高達915人，實際被處以死刑者有135人，一部分人則死於監獄中。如此驚人的數字，使此一事件震撼海內外。 筆者主要從社會史的角度來探討一吧哖事件，透過個案研究探討日本殖民政府政策對臺灣地方社會所造成的衝擊和一般民眾對此的反應，以突顯出世界殖民史中，臺灣殖民史與社會史所代表的意義。 作者簡介： 康　豹 (Paul R. Katz) 普林斯頓大學東亞系博士。曾在國立中正大學歷史研究所及國立中央大學歷史研究所擔任副教授與教授。目前為中央研究院近代史研究所研究員。其主要著作有 Demon Hordes and Burning Boats: The Cult of Marshal Wen （溫元帥）in Late Imperial Chekiang（浙江）、《臺灣的王爺信仰》等中、英文專書，以及中、英文論文若干篇。目前正在進行的研究計畫包括浙江宗教社會史研究及中國神判儀式研究。

The digital divide and the inequalities of the availability and deployment of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) between developed and developing countries have long been a source of concern. Evolution of language has evolved at multiple levels—from changes in the cognitive processes by which language is acquired in the individual, to language change by diffusion of acquired linguistic features across populations of individuals, to the emergence of linguistic features over phylogenetic time scales. Evolution of language at each of these levels interacts with that at each other level. This reader is designed for an intermediate-level Chinese course in which students not only develop proficiency in the Chinese language but also gain some knowledge of Chinese culture. It consists of twenty-two lessons, which are arranged according to their level of difficulty. Each lesson contains a core text and a reading text. The contents of the texts cover a wide variety of topics, including Chinese language structures and characters, Chinese customs, proverbs, holidays, social phenomena, religions, poetry and geography, as well as Chinese folklore. This work is the result of a co-operation between a social anthropologist and a social historian and is focused on the social evolution of Southern China. Based on a longitudinal fieldwork study in the Pearl River Delta, which is the heartland of the Cantonese-speaking world, the book explores how the ordinary people and their society evolved in a period of time characterized by drastic change. The study reports on how history supplies people with a repository for the future and accounts for how their march towards modernity is, at the same time, a reconstruction of a tradition.
