The structural mechanics of proteins that fold into functional shapes, polymers that aggregate and form clusters, and organic macromolecules that bind to inorganic matter can only be understood through statistical physics and thermodynamics. This book reviews the statistical mechanics concepts and tools necessary for the study of structure formation processes in macromolecular systems that are essentially influenced by finite-size and surface effects. Readers are introduced to molecular modeling approaches, advanced Monte Carlo simulation techniques, and systematic statistical analyses of numerical data. Applications to folding, aggregation, and substrate adsorption processes of polymers and proteins are discussed in great detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the reduction of complexity by coarse-grained modeling, which allows for the efficient, systematic investigation of structural phases and transitions. Providing insight into modern research at this interface between physics,

Discover a practical, streamlined approach to systems development that focuses on the latest developments with Tilley's Systems Analysis and Design, Cengage International Edition, 13th, and MindTap digital resources. Real examples clearly demonstrate both traditional and emerging approaches to systems analysis and design, including object-oriented and agile methods. You also study emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), cloud computing and cybersecurity. Meaningful projects, insightful assignments and both online and printed exercises emphasize the critical thinking and IT skills that are most important in today's dynamic, business-related environment.

E-based systems are ubiquitous in the modern world with applications spanning e-commerce, WLANs, health care and government organisations. The secure transfer of information has therefore become a critical area of research, development, and investment. This book presents the fundamental concepts and tools of e-based security and its range of applications. The core areas of e-based security - authentication of users; system integrity; confidentiality of communication; availability of business service; and non-repudiation of transactions - are covered in detail. Throughout the book the major trends, challenges and applications of e-security are presented, with emphasis on public key infrastructure (PKI) systems, biometric-based security systems, trust management systems, and the e-service paradigm. Intrusion detection technologies, virtual private networks (VPNs), malware, and risk management are also discussed. Technically oriented with many practical examples, this book is suitable f

In the past few decades we have come to understand that even motions in simple systems can have complex and surprising properties. Chaotic Dynamics provides a clear introduction to these chaotic phenomena, based on geometrical interpretations and simple arguments, without the need for prior in-depth scientific and mathematical knowledge. Richly illustrated throughout, examples are taken from classical mechanics whose elementary laws are familiar to the reader. In order to emphasize the general features of chaos, the most important relations are also given in simple mathematical forms, independent of any mechanical interpretation. A broad range of potential applications are presented, ranging from everyday phenomena through engineering and environmental problems to astronomical aspects. Chaos occurs in a variety of scientific disciplines, and proves to be the rule, not the exception. This book is primarily intended for undergraduate students in science, engineering, and mathematics.

For courses in electrical & computing engineering. Feedback control fundamentals with context, case studies, and a focus on design Feedback Control of Dynamic Systems, 8th Edition, covers the material that every engineer needs to know about feedback control-including concepts like stability, tracking, and robustness. Each chapter presents the fundamentals along with comprehensive, worked-out examples, all within a real-world context and with historical background provided. The text is devoted to supporting students equally in their need to grasp both traditional and more modern topics of digital control, and the author's focus on design as a theme early on, rather than focusing on analysis first and incorporating design much later. An entire chapter is devoted to comprehensive case studies, and the 8th Edition has been revised with up-to-date information, along with brand-new sections, problems, and examples.
