In the early days of computer science, the interactions of hardware, software, compilers, and operating system were simple enough to allow students to see an overall picture of how computers worked. W

Originally published in 1940, this book was aimed at students of science who had not previously been acquainted with algebra and the core mathematical principles. 'It is quite wrong that science students, particularly biology students, should go to their universities without having been made aware of even the existence of a side of mathematics whose importance is becoming more and more apparent'. The book caters for students who wish to develop their mathematical and reasoning skills, necessary to progress in the sciences. Chapters are broad in scope, detailed and varied; chapter titles include, 'The theory of quadratic equations', 'Probability' and 'Statistics'. A multitude of examples are included throughout to reinforce learning and answers can be found at the back. Providing an overview of algebra for school students before entering undergraduate science, this book will be of significant value to anyone with an interest in mathematics and the history of education.

When this book was first published, recent aspects of human factors research had led to methodologies that integrated usability into the development of interactive systems. MUSE was one of the pioneering methods for Usability Engineering. It provides an environment in which human factors contributions can realise their full potential. MUSE supports active human factors involvement in both design specification and evaluation, and takes system development from user requirements to user interface design. Its methods describe how design errors can be avoided or rectified throughout system development, as well as showing how errors can be identified and providing support for inter-disciplinary design planning and coordination. It therefore ranks as one of the best developed and most completely structured human factors methods. This book reviews the motivation for developing MUSE, and provides readers with a manual for method application. It will be essential reading for all involved with sy

This modern and self-contained book offers a clear and accessible introduction to the important topic of machine learning with neural networks. In addition to describing the mathematical principles of the topic, and its historical evolution, strong connections are drawn with underlying methods from statistical physics and current applications within science and engineering. Closely based around a well-established undergraduate course, this pedagogical text provides a solid understanding of the key aspects of modern machine learning with artificial neural networks, for students in physics, mathematics, and engineering. Numerous exercises expand and reinforce key concepts within the book and allow students to hone their programming skills. Frequent references to current research develop a detailed perspective on the state-of-the-art in machine learning research.

Have you ever wanted to know how modern digital communications systems work? Find out with this step-by-step guide to building a complete digital radio that includes every element of a typical, real-world communication system. Chapter by chapter, you will create a MATLAB realization of the various pieces of the system, exploring the key ideas along the way, as well as analyzing and assessing the performance of each component. Then, in the final chapters, you will discover how all the parts fit together and interact as you build the complete receiver. In addition to coverage of crucial issues, such as timing, carrier recovery and equalization, the text contains over 400 practical exercises, providing invaluable preparation for industry, where wireless communications and software radio are becoming increasingly important. A variety of extra resources are also provided online, including lecture slides and a solutions manual for instructors.

Nearly all major global financial centres have developed systems of consumer financial dispute resolution. Such systems aim to assist parties to resolve a growing number of monetary disputes with financial institutions. How governments and self-regulatory organizations design and administer financial dispute resolution mechanisms in the context of increasingly turbulent financial markets is a new area for research and practice. Consumer Financial Dispute Resolution in a Comparative Context presents comparative research about the development and design of these mechanisms in East Asia, North America and Europe. Using a comparative methodology and drawing on empirical findings from a multi-jurisdictional survey, Shahla F. Ali examines the emergence of global principles that influence the design of financial dispute resolution models, considers the structural variations between the ombuds and arbitration systems, and offers practical proposals for reform.
