Gottfried Hermann's Opuscula (1827–1877) collects in eight volumes the shorter writings of this central figure of nineteenth-century classical philology. Best known for his work on Greek metrics and his editions of Aeschylus, Euripides and others, Hermann (1772–1848) drew on Kantian phenomenology as well as his own formidable understanding of ancient grammars to advance a compelling program of classical scholarship that took language itself as the primary witness to the distant past. Hermann's grammar-based scholarship drew criticism, but established him as foundational to modern philology. As Sihler wrote in 1933, 'He accepted nothing on mere authority, but investigated the causes and roots of every matter.' Volume 6 (1835) includes Hermann's German essays on Pindar, and on English scholarship on Greek poetry, as well as a Greek text with German translation of Aeschylus' Eumenides. After visiting Ethiopia on diplomatic missions in 1906 and 1907 Armbruster published this three-volume reference work on colloquial, spoken Amharic between 1908 and 1920. Armbruster's study of Amharic was one of the first to be written in English, and exemplifies the shift among linguists away from the formal, classics-based style of earlier reference grammars towards a focus on colloquial speech and communication. The examples are drawn from direct knowledge of the contemporary language, unlike similar works of the period which were often based on centuries-old Ethiopian Orthodox biblical texts. Volume 2, published in 1910, is an English–Amharic vocabulary, with guidance on pronunciation and idiomatic Amharic translations of English phrases and sentences.

A central figure in Victorian science, William Whewell (1794–1866) held professorships in Mineralogy and Moral Philosophy at Trinity College, Cambridge, before becoming Master of the college in 1841. His mathematical textbooks, such as A Treatise on Dynamics (1823), were instrumental in bringing French analytical methods into British science. This three-volume history, first published in 1837, is one of Whewell's most famous works. Taking the 'acute, but fruitless, essays of Greek philosophy' as a starting point, it provides a history of the physical sciences that culminates with the mechanics, astronomy, and chemistry of 'modern times'. Volume 1 studies Greek physics and metaphysics, attributing their failure to a method that derived its principles from the common use of language. It surveys the state of the physical sciences in the middle ages, and deals with the rise of 'formal' astronomy - based on observation rather than calculation - as exemplified by Copernicus.

Henry Armstrong (1848–1937) was a controversial and energetic publicist for reforms in science teaching and curricula. He was concerned to make teaching at all levels less didactic and authoritarian, more practical and experimental; where possible a student should be prompted by his own curiosity, and should learn things first hand. He called his approach 'heuristic' - meaning learning through discovery - and sought to establish it through public platforms like the British Association, schools and through his own training of teachers. Whilst it is a concise account, written by the little-known Irish clergyman Thomas Campbell (1733–1795), it is notable for its frank description of encounters with Samuel Johnson. Campbell is unsparing in relating the crass aspects of Johnson's behaviour, such as his temperamentality and use of bad language, along with his manifold qualities.
