Understanding Language Testing

An exploration of the place of radical ideas and activity in English political and social history over three centuries. Its core concern is whether a long-term history of radicalism can be written. Are the things that historians label 'radical' linked into a single complex radical tradition, or are they separate phenomena linked only by the minds and language of historians? Does the historiography of radicalism uncover a repressed dimension of English history, or is it a construct that serves the needs of the present more than the understanding of the past? The book contains a variety of answers to these questions. As well as an introduction and eleven substantive chapters, it also includes two 'afterwords' which reflect on the implications of the book as a whole for the study of radicalism. The distinguished list of contributors is drawn from a variety of disciplines, including history, political science, and literary studies.

One of the key questions in cognitive psychology is how people represent knowledge about concepts such as football or love. Some researchers have proposed that concepts are represented in human memory by the sensorimotor systems that underlie interaction with the outside world. These theories represent developments in cognitive science to view cognition no longer in terms of abstract information processing, but in terms of perception and action. In other words, cognition is grounded in embodied experiences. Studies show that sensory perception and motor actions support understanding of words and object concepts. Moreover, even understanding of abstract and emotion concepts can be shown to rely on more concrete, embodied experiences. Finally, language itself can be shown to be grounded in sensorimotor processes. Kudrun is a German epic poem extant in only one manuscript, the Ambraser Handschrift of the early sixteenth century. It is thought, however, to have been composed within the decade 1230–40, and is thus contemporaneous with other epics of the classical age of Middle High German literature, such as the Nibelungenlied, Parzival and Tristan. Scholars have done Kudrun a disservice, however, by presenting it as a conscious imitator and rival of the Nibelungenlied. In this 1978 book, Dr Campbell sets the record straight and secures proper recognition for Kudrun. Regarding the epic as a unity, he pays particular attention to the language of the text, and past emendations. He also examines the degree to which characters in Kudrun impress as individual creations. Dr Campbell's conclusion is that the Kudrun poet had a keen understanding of human nature which enabled him to present his characters with impressive accuracy, consistency and vitality.
