Konstan (classics and the humanistic tradition and comparative literature, Brown U.) inquires into Athenian philosopher Epicurus' (341-270 BC) analysis of irrational fears and desires, arguing that such emotions played a more central and controlling role in his system than has often been supposed. He also looks at how Roman poet Lucretius (95-55 BC) interpreted the ideas. The study was first published as Some Aspects of Epicurean Psychology by E. J. Brill, Leiden in 1973; the second edition, first published in Italian in 2007, incorporates subsequent discoveries and recent thinking, but preserves the basic argument.
