本書共有十個單元，每單元包括兩篇課文。
本書強調語言基本功的訓練和語言實用能力的培養，因此在每單元的第一篇課文后均配有大量練習，其中包括回答問題（Comprehension Questions）、話題討論（Topics for Discussion）、詞匯（Vocabulary）、短文填空（Cloze）、翻譯（Translation）和寫作 （Writing）。
每一單元中還增設了補充材料(Additional Work）和諺語（Proverbs）。補充材料包括三個部分：習語學習、詞匯補充和閱讀欣賞。
作者簡介
曾道明，復旦大學英語語言文學教授。1949年5月生，江西萍鄉人。1970年就讀于復旦大學外文系，1973年12月赴新西蘭維多利亞大學學習，主修英國語言、英美文學和翻譯學。1976年10月歸國后任教于復旦大學外文系和英語教學部至今。1992年9月赴美進修、主修語音學理論。現主要從事英語語言教學以及翻譯學和英美文學研究。發表譯著、論文和編寫教材20余部（篇），其中主編教材有《研究生英語泛讀》、《博士生英語泛讀》、《博士生英語精讀》等。2001年獲上海市教學成果三等獎，2005年獲上海市教學成果二等獎。
