Twenty-seven chapters are arranged in three volumes, the first dealing with planning and configuration of wastewater treatment plants; the second, liquid treatment processes; and the third, solids processing and management. Reflecting technical advances since the previous edition published 11 years ago, the fifth edition includes material on membrane bioreactors, fixed-film/activated sludge systems, disinfection alternatives to chlorine, biotrickling filtration for odor control, increased use of ballasted flocculation, sidestream nutrient removal, and the modeling of processes as a basis of design and evaluation of alternatives. Emphasis has shifted away from process fundamentals, case histories, and operations (readers are referred to other publications), in favor of the concept of sustainability, energy management, odor control and air emissions, and approaches to minimizing biosolids production, among other topics. The primary function of the Committee is to originate and produce, through appropriate subcommittees, special publications dealing with technical aspects of the broad interests of the Federation.
