Harold F. Schuknect (1917-1996), was long affiliated with the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and the two current editors, Saumil N. Merchant and Joseph B. Nadol are both currently affiliated with those institutions. Schuknect's name is now at the head of this massive text, which was first published in 1974, and revised for a second edition in 1993. The text emphasizes clinical history and laboratory findings and is based on a collection of some 2,000 human temporal bones prepared and studied at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Organization is in sections on anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology; disease processes of the ear; histopathology following surgical treatment; and an entirely new section on patterns of degeneration of the ear with multiple etiologies. New full color digital images of histopathology are included, and a new labeling scheme indicating normal structures and abnormalities enhances the presentation.
