Kenneth Newman (1924-2006), renowned ornithologist and artist, contributed significantly to the growing interest in and awareness of birds in southern Africa. His numerous books have sold close to a million copies worldwide. Past president of the South African Ornithological Society, he received the SAOS Gill Memorial Award and the Zoological Society's Stevenson-Hamilton Award. His daughter, Vanessa Newman, who has inherited her father's keen birding instincts, lives and works in London.
