商品簡介
International contributors in computing, library science, educational studies, and languages share practices and advice with those who want to use 3D immersive worlds and virtual environments to support social constructivist approaches in education and training. The first part of the book reviews philosophical foundations of social constructivist instruction and describes constructivist design of virtual worlds such as Second Life. Part 2 considers the role of presence as it relates to pedagogy, addressing issues related to immediacy, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the role of the academic library in supporting learners in virtual environments. Parts 3 and 4 present applications of activity theory, such as using Second Life to teach health professionals about disabilities, and applications of other constructivist methods, such as using the learning environment Kingdoms to teach elementary students a new language. The last part of the book presents new ways to think about constructivist pedagogy in 3D virtual worlds, such as the Ecology of Culturally Competent Design. The audience for the book includes educators, instructional technologists, and trainers in higher education, K-12 education, and corporate training environments. Cheney is affiliated with the instructional technology program and Sanders is affiliated with the library science program at Appalachian State University.
