Although she held an important position of educational leadership for eighteen years, Sarah Raymond Fitzwilliam’s story has been largely overlooked. This historical biography of Fitzwilliam examines her abolitionist roots growing up on a stop of the Underground Railroad, her training at a “normal school,” her tenure as a teacher, principal and the nation’s first city school superintendent (Bloomington, Illinois 1874-1892). In the process, Noraian also chronicles American society during the Gilded and Progressive ages.
Monica Cousins Noraian is Director of the History-Social Sciences Education Program and Assistant Professor of History at Illinois State University. She is active with the professional development of history-social science educators and pre-service teachers. Prior to joining the faculty of Illinois State University, she taught high school history in the Chicagoland area at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois and at West Chicago Community High School in West Chicago, Illinois. She resides in Bloomington, Illinois with her husband, Kirk, and daughters, Emma and Celeste. She enjoys travelling, spending time with her family and friends, and is active with many community service organizations.
