Multi-Center Phase III Clinical Trials and NCI Cooperative Groups: Workshop Summary

This report from the Institute of Medicine's National Cancer Policy Forum summarizes a workshop, "Multi-Center Phase III Clinical Trials and National Cancer Institute Cooperative Groups," which was held in Washington, DC, in July 2008, and served to outline the challenges faced by the National Cancer Institute's Cooperative Group Program, meant to enable the pooling of public resources available for the study of cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, and identify approaches for addressing these challenges and improve cancer clinical trials and the operation of the NCI program. The workshop addressed challenges to the organization of its clinical trials system and operation of Phase III clinical trials, patient recruitment and physician participation, data collection standards to establish safety and efficacy, and costs and payments within clinical trials.
