Leslie (tourism, Glasgow Caledonian U., Scotland) brings together 12 essays that examine the progress made towards sustainable development in major tourist areas around the world. Rather than focusing on consumers or sustainable tourism, the text emphasizes environmental performance and the adoption of environmental management systems by tourism enterprises. Contributors working in tourism, management, environment, and landscape architecture around the world address the following themes: the sustainability agenda, global warming, and consumerism; international developments and responses; the global marketplace; and national responses to the international environmental agenda and dimensions of tourism policy in the US, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Southern Africa, Turkey, the UK, and Ghana. It also considers how the three pillars of sustainability (balance between the economy, environment, and the people) are applied to tourism enterprises.
