商品簡介
The French princess Henrietta Maria became the queen of Charles I of England. Their happy marriage was the only bright spot in Charles' reign as his battles with the conservative Protestants in England led to civil war and his execution. In her lifetime, Henrietta was vilified for leading the king into Catholicism. Later she was dismissed by historians as an ornamental queen. In this collection, Griffey (art history, University of Aukland, New Zealand) challenges both these assumptions. By combining traditional sources, such as account books, with an examination of the ways in which Henrietta allowed herself to be depicted in her many portraits as well as her patronage of court masques and devotional music, a more complex image of the queen emerges, one in which she is aware of the political implications of her actions and endeavors to direct the results. The essays are illustrated with plates of much of the art commissioned by the king and queen including a number of portraits by her favorite court painter, Van Dyke.
