Clinical Information Systems: Overcoming Adverse Consequences

This work will help clinicians and information technology professionals overcome unintended consequences associated with clinical information systems. The information is based on a research project conducted at the Oregon Health and Science University, drawing on interviews with clinical, technical, and administrative personnel around the country. Each chapter consists of a published or unpublished paper written by the project's team members, edited to remove repetitions about methodology. The book details different types of unintended consequences of clinical information systems, such as those associated with clinical workflow, decision support systems, and overdependence on technology. It provides a list of considerations that organizations should keep in mind during implementation, and offers an assessment tool that readers can use to study their own organizations.
