Although most policymakers and lay people assumed advances in technology would serve as the backbone of global development, few initially regarded sustainable growth as a key factor in globalization's promise of poverty reduction. These reports, taken from presentations at a forum held in Washington DC in February 2007, reflect the shift away from development at any environmental and human cost. Topics of forum keynotes and sessions include building science, technology and innovation (STI) capacity, reducing poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals, adding value to natural resource exports, catching up (for latecomers), building STI through research and development, and understanding government and development partner perspectives.
