Although many of the US cultural producers who left the United States for political reasons during the 1940s and 1950s relocated to Europe, a significant community of Cold War exiles emerged in Mexico, centered on Mexico City and Cuernavaca. Schreiber (American studies, U. of New Mexico) examines the productions of this community as a culture of critical resistance, arguing that cross-border circumstances and the specific context of Mexico were decisive for the form and content of their work. Throughout, she emphasizes the term "transnational" to convey the way that critical and conscience transgression of national boundaries (both in the sense of calling attention to political, economic, and cultural relations that do not take political borders as their ultimate horizon and in terms of critiquing the normative and exclusionary functions of nationalism) came to be, in various ways, central to the cultural production of the Cold War exiles.
