Grekul (Canadian literature, U. of British Columbia-Okanagan) goes beyond the naive multiculturalism of the 1980s and 1990s in her assessment of the works of Canadian authors of Ukrainian descent. Grekul first re-reads literary representations of Ukrainians from 1900 to 1970 in terms of the economies of assimilation, focusing on the female ethnic subject, and then works through the process of moving from multiculturalism to transculturalism by way of historic revision, hybrid politics oral history and poetry, specifically in the work of Haas, Ryga and Suknaski. She then recasts the concept of Ukrainian Canadian literature in terms of its new approaches to identity in the works of Keefer and in Kotash's creative non-fiction. The result is a close interpretation of monumental culture and a model for "ethnic literature" studies. Distributed by Michigan State U. Press.
