McCready (urban education, U. of Toronto) uses vignettes to illustrate a theoretical concept, a dilemma of teaching, or the social and cultural contexts of gay and gender non-conforming black male students' lives. They are from is ethnographic fieldwork in the Parkwood High School community, which is the focus of the book. He uses black feminist theories of intersectionality to interpret the everyday lives of four gay and gender-nonconforming African American males in a North American urban high school segregated by race and sex. He also theorizes how the multiple forces of marginalization, discrimination, and/or oppression affect them; and the implications of his findings for theorizing and making policy.
