商品簡介
The sixth installment in Salem Press's ongoing Great Events from History series, like its predecessors, revises and expands material from earlier reference works. Although over half of the material is new to these volumes, editor Powell (Oklahoma Baptist U.) has also incorporated revised versions of virtually all the 19th century essays from the Chronology of European History: 15,000 B.C. to 1997 (1997); Great Events from History: North American Series, Revised Edition (1997); and Great Events from History II (1991-1995). Aiming to meet the curriculum needs of history students at the high school and undergraduate levels, the volumes provide coverage of geopolitical events; social and cultural developments; literary, artistic, and musical movements; immigration and demographic trends; legal developments, and scientific and technological advances. The essays average 1600 words in length and adhere to a uniform format that gives the date or date range of the event, provides common an "also- known-as" names, summarizes the event and its significance, lists relevant categories, lists key figures, presents a chronological narrative of the event, assesses the event's historical importance, gives a guide to further reading, and provides cross-references to other articles within this publication and in its companion set (Great Lives from History: The Nineteenth Century, 1801-1900 4 vols., 2007). The final volume includes a general time line, a glossary, a series of indexes, and guides to print and Internet resources. Annotation c2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
