Contending that black Americans have already attained physical and political freedom, the author (a black psychologist in private practice in California) argues that the only significant impediment to full freedom is individual attachment to "black persons, black myths, and black traditions that impede individual and personal progress." In order to achieve freedom, black individuals must "assert independent and healthy separation from our race peers." In his view, this would require abandoning unquestioned obedience to elders, overvaluation and overprotection of everything black, and those black persons who fail to grab the freedoms available to them.
